Constable John Atkinson Circle Celebrates Charter
Members of Constable John Atkinson
Circle # 5147 in Kingsville, Ontario
celebrated their Charter Ceremonial
by holding a Blue Mass on All Souls day
Friday November 2nd. The Atkinson family
were special guests of the circle which was
named in honour of Constable John Atkinson,
a member of the Knights of Columbus who
tragically lost his life while on duty serving
and protecting his community. What a fitting way to celebrate his life
and honour his memory. We are very proud of these fine young men
who definitely know the meaning of "ESTO DIGNUS".  Presenting the
plaque to Mrs. Atkinson and her children Mitchell and Nicole in the
picture above is Deputy Chief Squire Kristopher Cox. In attendance
for the Mass were members of the Windsor Police Services, Ontario
Provincial Police (two NCO's in number one dress) and their entire
local detachment. The capacity crowd included Kingsville Fire
Department and Paramedic personnel along with Knights of
Columbus 4th Degree Honour Guard who also attended to show
their support.

Ontario Circles Win Brother Barnabas Award
Three Ontario Circles were part of the twenty-five Columbian
Squires circles from 16 worldwide jurisdictions that earned the
2006-
2007 Brother Barnabas Award
, which recognizes the most
outstanding circle activities conducted during the fraternal year. Our
Award-winning circles and a description of their program activities
are listed below.

When Squires from
John Brazill Circle 1385 in McGregor, Ont.,
were on their annual retreat weekend, they noticed that the outdoor
Stations of the Cross at the retreat center needed some work. They
installed a bench at the start of the stations and an entranceway.
They also planted flowers and installed a mailbox with copies of “the
Way of the Cross” for retreatants. The priest who heads the retreat
house was very pleased and thanked the Squires for a job well done.

Sir Knight Leonard T. Smith Circle 4742 in Oshawa, Ont., held
two fish fries at their parish to raise more than $1,000 for the
church's building fund.

Father Henri Masse Circle 3453 in Comber, Ont., conducted a
book drive which brought in 2,000 books. Proceeds from the sale of
the books were used to fund scholarships for students across
southwestern Ontario.

The Provincial Board joins Squires from all over the province
in congratulating these three circles for living up to our
motto "Esto Dignus ~ Be Worthy" and Making Us all so Proud!

2007 Camp Weekend Enjoyed by All
On Friday, September 7, the Squires of Ontario meet at Camp
Samac in Oshawa for the 2007 Ontario
Columbian Squires Camp. As Circles
arrived from all over Ontario, and began
to come together in the main cabin, it was
clear that the weekend would be filled with
fun, faith and memories.

The first order of business on Friday night was a welcome ceremony
that included dinner and the first Provincial Board Grace Contest, in
which Circles presented their own innovative grace prayers. Many
were very creative, fun and interesting. Way to go Squires! Following
the welcome ceremony on Friday, Squires began to shuffle off to
bed, as the weekend would provide little time for rest.

A Per Capita Reminder to All Ontario Circles
The Provincial Board would like to inform all Columbian Squires in
Ontario that the
annual per-capita payment will be now due on
January 31, 2007.

The deadline has been extended by one month due to invoices
being mailed later than expected. The per-capita is an annual due
which the Columbian Squires Ontario Provincial Board requires all
Circles to remit so the Board can travel across the province to
attend circle activities and represent the Squires of Ontario at
special functions such as the Ordinandi Dinner or the Knights of
Columbus Convention. This payment also helps the Board run the
annual Squires Camp Weekend in September and the annual
Convention in June.

We encourage all Circles to pay as soon as possible because the
cost of this fee increases on February 1, 2008. The per-capita is
$65 before February 1, 2008; $75 before May 17, 2008; and $85
after May 17, 2008. Circles that do not pay their per-capita and plan
on attending the annual Convention will not be allowed delegates
and will have their status marked as inactive. We remind Circles
once again as the due date is right around the corner to pay as
soon as possible. We thank Circles that have already paid there
per-capita for the 2007 - 2008fraternal year.

Invoices have been mailed to all circles. For payment mailing
address or any other information, please contact

Provincial Chief Squire Dylan Robertson, who gave a wonderful
speech which was themed on keeping Christ in Christmas. The
Knights along with the Provincial Board were very impressed with
Dylan’s insights. After dessert, we left the beautifully decorated
dinning hall and went to .

Triumph of the Cross
The World Youth Day Cross is a very powerful symbol of our faith
and the unity it brings to all people around the world. Some people
have called it the Olympic Torch of Catholics today. It travels around
the world as a reminder that everyone is connected by one symbol,
one object: the Cross.

What does this have to do with Squires? The World Youth Day Cross
is a much greater symbol of something we have in our brotherhood:
the Unity Cross. Although much smaller and less known, it still serves
the same great purpose of bringing unity to all Squires Circles. The
Unity Cross is just more than two planks of wood that should be
ignored; it brings the spirit of every single Squire in its presence and
keeps it with us. The Unity Cross is a powerful symbol that should be
greater known as the foundation of Squires unity.

I encourage all Squires to look at this article from Columbia Magazine
entitled “

Ontario Welcomes it's Newest Circle in Trenton
On February 23, 2008 a new Circle was started in Trenton. We
would like to thank four members of the Provincial Board for helping
in this endeavor; Prov. Chief Dylan Robertson, Prov. Deputy Chief
Dwayne Santos, Prov. Bursar Dareo Alisterosario and Prov. Marshall
Vince Capitano. We would also like to thank Eric Metz who played the
part of the Notary, and Area Chairman Mike Gundert who played the
part of Chief Counsellor. Robert Forder who is the District Deputy for
Distrct 3 played the part of the Chancellor. A special thanks to State
Squires Chairman Paul Crawford who played the Arm & Pole
Captains for the team.

Thirteen boys were invested into the new circle. A short reception
followed the ceremony. The original plan was to reactivate the Circle
under the old name and number but the name had no significance to
the boys or members of the Council. Therefore they are starting a
new Circle under the name of Fr. Hanley (
name to be submitted for
approval
). Fr. Hanley was a very active parish priest in the area for
twenty years and passed away 6 years ago on February 23.

We thank the Grand Knight Germain J. Loignon and the members of
St. Peter's Council 2438 for sponsoring the new Circle, and we send
a hearty "Welcome" to the Circle Chief Squire Christopher
MacDonald, the Circle's Father Prior Fr. Stephane Pouliot and last
bu not least the Circle's Chief Counsellor Ed Lombardi.

We look forward to meeting you all and having your circle involved in
our upcoming Provincial activities.

Provincial Chief Squire Wins O.C.Y Award
A Message from Arthur Peters, State Treasurer
I am honored to serve as the Liaison for the Columbian Squires to
the Ontario State Board of the Knights of Columbus.  For me, this
completes a process that began almost
28 years ago when I joined Circle 2041
in Brampton.

I have many great memories of my time
as a Columbian Squire.  I can remember
volunteering to help a family whose
parents were blind by cleaning and
painting their house, visiting Tullamore
Nursing Home on many occasions to chat
with the residents and host the odd game of bingo, raising money by
staffing a parking lot for the Brampton summer fair, and playing flag
football with other Circles across Ontario. Serving for one year as
the Ontario Provincial Bursar was an experience that I will never
forget.

Provincial Board Attends the K. of C. State Convention
The Provincial Board would like to thank the Knights of Columbus
State Board
for a wonderful 105th Ontario State Convention.
The weekend took place May 17-19, 2008 at the DoubleTree Hotel
in Toronto. In addition to holding a business meeting, the Board was
able to go through many details of their upcoming Convention and
consult with the Senators Club.

The Board served at both Convention Masses that weekend for
bishops from across the province with seminarian Tim Runstedler.
Throughout the weekend, the Board spoke with many Knights about
the Columbian Squires and gave some the idea of starting their own
Circles.

They also held a raffle with a 19" flat screen LCD television valued at
$400 donated by Senator Garry Beach; a leather jacket from White
Eagle valued at $350 donated by Bro. Ed "Whitey" Chmielewsk; and
a nativity set donated by Assistant Squires Chairman Steve Laicini
and his wife Yvonne. Thank you greatly to all out donors and those
who bought tickets. The raffle raised more than $2,000 for the
Squires program in Ontario.

Provincial Chief Squire Dylan Robertson gave an interactive speech
on the definition of the word “together” and how it applies to
Catholics in today’s society. The speech can be seen here
DOWNLOAD SPEECH. The State Board was then presented with the most
recent committee reports and issue of the Connection newsletter.

Thank you to New Circle Development Chairman Dennis Metz and
his wife Linda, Registrar Paul Gamble and his wife Anne, Area
Chairman Joe Bodnar and his wife Tricia as well as multiple Senators
for their help in manning the Columbian Squires promotional booth.
The weekend was very busy but provided much enthusiasm as we
head into the year’s close. Thank you once again to State Board for
all their support this year.
